Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Part 33: Episode 2, Day 3, Trial: A Matter of Perspective

Some contention on this choice, but the above image really says it all. Mr. White says left, when Miss May said right. (Yes, it would be easier if I re-showed all the evidence descriptions with each vote....but that would be too easy!)

Music: Silence

The music going quiet is a good sign that we're on the right track here. But first, what happens if we get it wrong?

Well, once again, the only dialogue change is when naming the defendant, right before pronouncing them guilty. In this case, the judge stutters a bit due to our unique situation.

The final courtroom shot is the same as when we first started today's trial, with Maya supporting Phoenix and no one in the witness stand this time. Other than that, it's the same old game over scene!

Anyway, back to the dramatic objection. We didn't care about Miss May's testimony conflicting with Mr. White when it came to identifying the killer, so I'm not sure why anyone is going to care about this contradiction, but here goes!

But that directly contradicts Miss May's testimony!

Music: Objection!

...!

Oh hoh hoh. It is simple. You have misheard her.

I think not.

Look at the floor plans...

Hey, those who wanted to use the floor plans - they are getting used, if indirectly. Unfortunately actually presenting them earlier counts as an incorrect choice and incurs a penalty.

She would have been running directly away from the door!

She would have been running into a dead end!

Don't you find that odd?

Whoa we rattled him early. Great leap of logic there, Phoenix!

I did see her run to the left... I did.

Remember the first episode? The very first contradiction we spotted in the killer's testimony there, was actually the one line he was telling the truth. Could it be the same here?

Maya agrees!

True.

(Maybe he really did see the victim run left...?)

(So he did witness the killing...?)

Phoenix just remembered that White is actually the killer and had a completely different perspective to the murder.

Mr. Wright?

Yes, Your Honor?

Miss May says "right," and Mr. White says "left."

Given a difference in perspective... both are right!

Nice, triumph pose already!

Hah! I doubt it!

Er, rather, that does not clear up the contradiction!

:jj: Edgeworth can't believe either of his two witnesses would tell the truth, either!

What!?

quote:

Since both are right, choosing one or the other doesn't make much of a difference. For Mr. White, we get:

As Mr. White has testified, Mia ran to the left.

But... But if that's the case...

Why would she run in the opposite direction from the door?

She did not. She was running towards the door, Your Honor.

Bwah! Now you're the one making a contradiction, Mr. Wright!

Not at all.

No triumph pose, but we come to the same conclusion...

quote:

Saying Miss May was right looks much the same:

As Miss May has stated, Mia ran to the right after she was attacked.

What is this? I am not fashioning fabrications, I assure you!

That lady ran to the left! I am sure of it!

Then there can be only one explanation.

Eh...? And that is?

Music: Silence

I think our best strategy is going to be getting the crowd on our side. Keep playing it up Phoenix!

Mr. Wright! What do you mean?

If he was not in the hotel, where could he have been?

Two crowd reactions back-to-back! We're on a roll!

More specifically, he was standing here!

Music: Logic and Trick

Looks like we're asked to point on the diagram where Mr. White was standing. I guess technically his testimony would work if he had been standing anywhere in the top-middle part of the room, but we know that he's really Mr. "K" here.

This is where he was!

quote:

There are a couple ways to get this one wrong, though either one comes without penalty and as many free retries as you need. Selecting anywhere on the diagram outside one of the colored circles:

That's where he was!

Hold it right there, Mr. Wright!

If he was there during the very act of murder...

That would make him an accomplice!

Impossible!

There was no one other than the criminal and victim in the room!

There is no evidence, no proof to the contrary! None!

S-sorry! Er... let me try that again!

quote:

We can also place Mr. White on the victim's circle...

That's where he was!

M-Mr. Wright! We are not fools!

How could he have been exactly where the victim was standing!?

(Oh... oh, right!)

Mr. Wright! What is the meaning of this!?

Sorry, Your Honor! Sorry! Let me try that again...

As rigged as the system is against us here, they're still more than willing to give us extra chances after we make obvious errors at least.

Music: Silence

Please! This is no time for jokes in ill taste!

Music: Suspense

Why thank you, Edgeworth, for making that point so eloquently for us.

Another triple gavel strike, we really have the crowd riled up now!

Order! I will have order!

Mr. Wright! What are you suggesting!?

Edgeworth is going to try and recover this mess.

We have no real evidence, so tripping the witness up is all we can do. That said, sounds like it's about time for round two!

...

Ho hoh hoh!

(What now!? He's... laughing!?)

The hilarity of the moment made me remember something...

Mr. Your Honor...

Might I be allowed to testify once more?

Music: Silence

Very well, let's hear your revised testimony.

Let's see what easily-disprovable excuse he comes up with this time!

Music: Questioning - Moderato

You chased her, and delivered the final blow.

You see? You hit her twice!

Music: Silence

A plausible explanation, maybe, if it weren't for one little detail.

Will you be cross-examining the witness's testimony?

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Miss May's testimony was correct... as was mine!

What do you mean by that!

I don't think we'll get much by pressing here, but might as well show it off. I'm still waiting to get hit with a penalty for it someday.

(Hey buddy, you're an American, too!)

When you assaulted the girl, she first ran to the left.

What do you mean "first"?

You just wait, your arrogance here will make your coming fall all the sweeter.

First, she ran to the left, and then...

And then you hit her, savagely! That is what I saw.

I didn't hit anyone!

Now, now, Mr. Wright. There is no point hiding things from this court.

I'm not hiding anything!

Mr. Wright, you have been warned.

There's a sound effect like when we lose some health bars, but no actual penalty here.

Next, with the last of her strength, she ran to the right.

What do you mean "next"!?

"Next" is what comes after "first."

I know that!

Then that is all you need to know, Mr. Lawyer.

You chased her, and delivered the final blow.

Stop saying it was me!

Just be patient man, we've got this one.

But, it was you.

Ugh, you can't prove a negative, that's why the burden of proof should be on the prosecution, but whatever...

(Argh! Can I do nothing right? Nothing!?)

That is what Miss May saw.

Abso-posi-lutely! That's right, of course!

(Where did he pick up that annoying phrase...?)

You see? You hit her twice!

I suppose I was.

Well, that's all of it. Any final advice you two?

What do you think Phoenix?

Let him laugh for now. I'll soon wipe that smile off his face!

Well, we have the same evidence list as last time. What should we use this time?
